From 2021 to 2025, the Swedish Support Programme for Scholars from Afghanistan enabled eight scholars to continue their academic work in safety at Swedish higher education institutions. The programme was funded by Sida and coordinated by the SAR-Sweden Secretariat at the University of Gothenburg.
The Support Programme was established in 2021 in response to the rapidly deteriorating situation for scholars and higher education in Afghanistan. With generous support from Sida and a strong commitment from Swedish higher education institutions, scholars who had been forced to leave the country were able to continue their research, teaching and academic development in Sweden.
For several participants, the initial placement also led to more long-term academic opportunities. Four scholars were admitted to PhD programmes, and one went on to a postdoctoral position. Others secured new academic placements in Sweden or through the international Scholars at Risk network. During their time in the programme, the scholars also contributed valuable expertise and knowledge to the research environments of which they became part.
The Support Programme has now come to an end, but the situation for scholars and higher education in Afghanistan remains extremely difficult. SAR-Sweden continues its work to protect academic freedom and support scholars at risk.
