About SAR-Sweden

SAR-Sweden serves as a platform for collaboration between Swedish members of the international network Scholars at Risk.

SAR-Sweden offers professional development, support, and exchange of experience for its member institutions. The section meets twice a year at termly section meetings, and maintains ongoing digital member dialogues on current topics.

The SAR-Sweden secretariat is currently hosted by the University of Gothenburg.

How can a university make use of its SAR membership?

A university can engage with its SAR membership in many ways. The most tangible — and resource-intensive — is to host an at-risk scholar. There is also the possibility of affiliating researchers remotely.

Other concrete ways to make use of the membership include organising seminars to highlight issues related to academic freedom, and actively working with responsible internationalisation, where SAR scholars can be a valuable resource.

Membership can also be integrated into education through student advocacy seminars or legal clinics. Institutions may also choose to act as supporting members within the SAR network.

Swedish universities can apply for co-funding to host a SAR scholar at their institution.

About Scholars at Risk

Scholars at Risk brings together over 650 universities and other organizations worldwide. In addition to providing academic sanctuaries for at-risk scholars, the network also engages in policy and advocacy work. Each year, SAR publishes the Free to Think report, offering an overview of the global state of academic freedom.
Together with the V-Dem Institute, the Global Public Policy Institute, and FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, SAR has also developed the Academic Freedom Index, which tracks the current global status of academic freedom.
